Landcape architect John Claudius Loudon was born on his family's farm in Scotland, and studied chemistry, botany, and agriculture at the University of Edinburgh. He began working as a landscape planner in Scotland and England, published numerous influential articles, and founded and edited several periodicals; about this time he was permanently weakened by rheumatic fever.
